How I Overcome Self Sabotage

A while ago I shared a post "be wary of self-sabotage disguised as 'self-care'. 'Just not feeling it, too overwhelmed, tired' can be a cloak of holding yourself back. Be discerning and just as much as you give yourself compassion, give yourself some real talk too".

I wanted to share a bit more insight on this as it seemed to deeply resonate with so many.

Yes, granted this is a bit of a different take on self-care. And don't get me wrong, I am ALL for self-care. This is not what this message is about. This message is about learning to truly discover where you are convincing yourself you need to 'step back' and 'have time off' when deep down you know you actually need to LEAN IN!

This entire week I have found myself procrastinating on a particular task ALL week that I needed to do.

I kept saying "I just wasn't feeling it" or "I needed more rest". Of course, some of that may have had some truth but really, when I looked deep down at what was going on, I was self-sabotaging.

My ego was telling me all sorts of things to make me hide.

And when I got really honest, I'm scared of the success that may come if I follow through on this task. Read on to find out HOW I moved through it (and how you can too!)...

Do you ever find in your biggest periods of expansion, perhaps when you're about to have a massive breakthrough, you find yourself taking the foot off the pedal and 'needing a break'? Helllllo ego.

Deep down all of us have our excuses and reasons that hold us back, and these excuses, reasons and justifications work for the ego (a part of you that likes to keep you safe and small). Often you will find that if you believe these excuses, reasons and justifications it will most likely leave you feeling deflated and kinda wishing you had followed through (that's the sign it was your ego).

We get to become discerning and ignite our own inner coach to get RUTHLESSLY HONEST with ourselves around if we truly need rest/self-care or if it is just part of ourselves hiding from our true potential.

Because if there is one thing I have learned HPW, it is that we are always capable of SO much more...

Here is the process I use to move through resistance & procrastination, that I encourage you all to use too...

ACTIONABLES TO BREAKTHROUGH:

  • Reflection Exercise: what is your favourite excuse, justification, or reason that holds you back? Write a breakup letter to your favourite excuse, justification or reason and let it know why this is the end and you will no longer be tolerating it in your space.

  • Deeper Questioning: the next time you are in that DEEP RESISTANCE and PROCRASTINATION to following through on something, the quicker you can get to awareness of what is going on the better. Here are a couple of things you can ask yourself...

    • simply go a layer deeper than your excuse or resistance and ask, what is really going on here? Acknowledge and accept the resistance or fear you are experiencing

    • consider, how am I going to feel once this thing is done/complete? If it will bring a sense of relief and get you closer to your vision, we have our answer

    • now share with someone and get some accountability to make this happen!

Go forth and MAKE SOME MOVES.

Big love as always,
Briony
