Six Signs You Need to Leave Your Job and What to Do About It

It’s never just a job.

Your work expresses who you are and what you care about in the world.

Many stay in the comfort of what they know, denying their soul’s truth.

Dreading Monday mornings but knowing how to do the work well enough. After all, it’s something you’ve trained for/a company you’ve worked in for years/insert-excuse-here.

But you’ve landed on this blog and podcast for a reason.

Because chances are you’re feeling miserable and unfulfilled. Thinking there must be more to life. Sometimes, it feels easier to ignore than to confront the truth.

It takes radical self-honesty to admit that you are not truly fulfilled. It takes energy to align your life and career with your gifts and passions.

So how do you know when to stay or when to go?

Here are SIX SIGNS it’s time to move on from your job:

  1. You are feeling burned out

It’s a clear sign to change if you’re feeling constantly unhappy, stressed, and exhausted at work, even after sufficient rest. If you find you have a deep sense of dread every Sunday, and after ten days of work, there is still no joy and excitement—it’s time to move on.

  2. Relying on stimulants to get you through

Yes, we said it; if you live on coffee, sugar, and other stimulants to create energy, that’s a clear indicator that a natural life force is lacking in your job! When you’re in your most authentic expression, energy will exude from your cells.

  3. Not using your unique gifts and talents

Do you feel like a cog in the machine? Being handed tasks that bore you? Then you need to be in a different role. The right job is where you can utilise and discover your unique gifts and talents. Yes, there is a level of administration in all positions. But alignment will feel like you are adding real, meaningful value to society no matter the task.

  4. You feel like you need to grow and develop

Have you been in your job for a while and feel you’re no longer learning or growing in any way? When you look ahead to the future, are you unexcited or uninterested in the training and development you can get in your job? It’s time to start looking for something new. Most roles that don’t have growth and development that light you up will become clock-in, clock-out jobs that will never truly expand you.

  5. You are in an environment that does not align with your values and beliefs.

Don’t underestimate this. You are the product of who you spend time with, and it could be time to reconsider your workplace if you look around and don’t feel inspired or connected with those around you. To truly thrive, you will need to (and want to!) be surrounded by people who 'get you' and have similar values & beliefs.

  6. Not feeling supported or valued.

This ties into the #5—your career advancement and trajectory will be limited if you are around leaders who do not value or support you. Suppose you feel your hard work is going unrecognised and your accomplishments are being overlooked. Get out of there and bring to a space and place invested in YOU!

Doing the inner work to understand what you truly want and what your gifts are is essential. It's vital to be open to the possibility of change.

Once you make that change, you will never look back.
